If The Dress Fits….

When I picked out my wedding dress, oh so many years ago (1987), I remember it fit perfectly when I first tried it on. Actually, it was a tiny bit snug in the waist. It was a gown I’d selected from a sale rack and they had only one. No chance of getting a different size. The woman in the store who was measuring me for alterations said something to me like ” well, it fits really good right now, just make sure you stay as you are”. What she meant of course was don’t gain any weight or this dress will not fit. And you know what happened? When I returned to the bridal store for my next fitting, I’d gained weight. Yep, the dress needed alterations in the waist. On the outside I tried to remain composed, but as soon as I hit the street on the way back to my car, I cried. As I drove home, I cried from a very deep place. Gosh, I was so incredibly hard on myself back then. 25 years or so later, I’m still pretty hard on myself. Now comes my crazy thought – I’m thinking about the famous holiday movie, It’s A Wonderful Life, staring James Stewart and Donna Reed. If you remember this line (that is if you have seen the movie), the little girl Zuzu says, “Look Daddy, teacher says, every time a bell rings an angel gets it’s wings”. George Baily (James Stewart’s character), holding his daughter close says, “That’s right, that right”. Then he looks heavenward and with a big smile says “Attaboy Clarence”. Needless to say, my wedding dress ended up looking beautiful on me and it all worked out just fine. Go figure. Namaste and Blessings, Mia Bella
